Students from the Anita Coutts School of Dance in Ballarat are thrilled to be going to a major dance competition next month in Sydney.

The McDonald’s Sydney Eisteddfod, which hosts a variety of performance events, draws more than 30,000 participants from across Australia each year.

Three of Ms Coutts’ students will be involved in one of the event’s major ballet competitions, the McDonald’s Ballet Scholarship.

Georgia Ballinger, Samantha Mitchell and Cassie Tattersall will be dancing against 164 others for a $3000 prize, with the chance of an additional $15,000 scholarship.

The Australian School of Ballet and the Royal Danish Ballet representatives watch the finalists and can offer scholarships to finalists at their discretion.

Ms Coutts said the competition could open up a whole world of possibilities to the girls.

“This is a very high standard event for a little town like Ballarat to be involved in,” she said. “It’s very exciting.”

Dancers Eliza Callil, Tahnee Simpson and Madelyn Rothe will be attending too, competing for a $7000 prize in a junior event against 85 others.

The McDonald’s Sydney Eisteddfod runs from May to September, with almost 400 events critiquing dance, music, acting, bands, choirs and orchestras.
